Having participated in a number of international exhibitions CONTRAFORMA design is well known worldwide. The leading position of CONTRAFORMA designers in their field is emphasised by the awards we are proud to have received including the world famous red dot design award.
Although operating principally as a design consultancy for furniture and interior design, the company also designs and produces a wide range of exclusive furniture, and have now ventured into home furnishings and window blinds. Limited editions of these products, designs and fabrics are produced in close cooperation with local manufacturers.
We’re also working a close collaboration with existing blinds retailer My DIY Blinds.
Nauris Kalinauskas (1972) – a well known designer not only in Lithuania, but also abroad started his career in the world of advertising. For a young man who studied architecture and had just graduated Vilnius Technical University and Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1996 it was a good business in the post soviet era. However, it was not the field best suited to self-expression and Nauris turned to furniture design – he developed an interest in technological processes and started to experiment with new materials. In 2000 he founded the design studio Contraforma. He holds the position of Director.
Having experience in graphic design and being an architect, he has always been interested in the simplicity and beauty of geometric forms. He finds inspiration in working with sheet materials by taking a 2 dimensional material and turning it into a 3D product. The simplicity of the material and the technology of shaping it stimulates creativity and, in some ways, helps to keep the design focused on simple, pure geometrical shapes and forms. His works stands out not only for utility, function and aesthetics but also for the creative use of non traditional materials for furniture design. When you block out the trivial elements of your environment and try to look at things from a different point of view, then you get that “amazing feeling of creativity, the sense of a desire to crystallise your thoughts into a physical form”, says Nauris.
His international success was probably the logical consequence of his philosophy that the concept behind an initial idea should be brought to fruition in production. Having participated in a number of international exhibitions his works are well known worldwide. During his life he has received numerous awards including the the red dot award for the seating series entitled LOGO, – to be received in June 2007.
After settling back to Australia in 2018, Nauris focus is now to take CONTRAFORMA’s wealth of experience and translate this into the domestic, commericial and wholesale home furnishings and window coverings market. Nauris has an advantage being an architect himself, he can advise how to work with commercial suppliers for contract fit outs of window blinds.
